Forgotten How to Have Fun?

If you’re like most responsible adults, your life has slowly been taken over by some very unfun things. The obligations of everyday life can leave you feeling squeezed with little room left for anything, and certainly nothing as frivolous as FUN.

Maybe it’s been so long since you ‘played’ that you think it’s something just for kids. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. EVERYONE needs some playtime in their lives. Play gives you a break from your everyday stresses and commitments, allowing you to relax and use your brain differently and creatively.

As adults, we tend to over-value productivity and undervalue the need to nurture your spirit. We might participate in extracurricular things but it’s often with an end goal in mind – a course that will help boost your career, or playing a competitive sport, or working out to lose weight. We’ve lost sight of the idea that sometimes it’s OK to do things that have no other outcome than they’re FUN.

Play brings us joy. It’s an escape. No matter who you are or what your life is like, we all need to escape once in awhile.

Play can take many different forms – maybe it’s with your partner, your pet, your kids, your friends, or just by yourself. It doesn’t have to be formal, structured, or elaborate. It just requires you doing something you enjoy that is obligation-free, both in terms of other people and yourself. There are no expectations, and no right or wrong way to do it.

Everyone’s definition of fun is different so think about something YOU like doing, something that requires very little preparation or commitment, and do it. Do it tonight, do it this weekend, do it this afternoon for five minutes.

You’ll be surprised how refreshed it makes you feel, how happy, and how much you missed having fun!
